Prices for tourist services in Yambol remain stable throughout the year. However, booking a hotel during the warmer months can be challenging, as there aren’t many available rooms, so it’s best to secure accommodation in advance. Travelers planning to drive to Yambol should keep in mind that car rental prices are much higher in the summer, often double what they are in the spring or fall.
Parking areas in the city
In 2019, paid parking spaces, commonly referred to as the “blue zone” in Bulgaria, were introduced in Yambol. These areas include streets located in the city center, with parking fees set at 1 lev per hour.
For more information on parking in Bulgaria.
However, finding free parking is still relatively easy. You can park on central streets in Yambol that are not part of the blue zone, such as Yordan Yovkov Street or Khan Tervel Street. There’s also a large free parking lot on Nikola Petrov Boulevard, near the bridge. Generally, finding a spot within 100–200 meters of the main attractions is quite manageable—just follow the signs and information boards.
Yambol sights
All of the city’s sights are in the center, so it’s easy to get around on foot. The only exception is the ruins of the ancient Kabyle, but you can get there by cab if you want. It is much more important to decide what transportation you will use to get to the city.
The ruins of Kabyle
The first Roman settlement on the site of modern-day Yambol was established in the 3rd century. For centuries, the city remained a key center of Bulgarian life, but in 1373 it was almost entirely destroyed by the Ottoman Turks. Today, the ancient history of the area is mainly reflected in the ruins of the ancient town of Kabile, located 10 km north of Yambol. Here, visitors can see the remains of a Christian church, the foundations of Roman baths, and military barracks.
Bezisten market
The center of Yambol is home to the main architectural landmarks from the Ottoman Empire and the Bulgarian Revival. The oldest structure is the Bezisten Market, built by the Turks in 1510. Under its unique roof with four domes, 12 shops were originally located. Although the layout was altered in the 20th century, the exterior of the market was preserved. Today, it houses a small museum, and the surrounding area has been transformed into a cozy pedestrian zone with cafés and a park.
Just 50 meters north of the market stands the city’s oldest mosque, Eski Dzhamiya, built in 1373. Interestingly, after Bulgaria’s liberation, the building first housed a grocery store and later a Christian Orthodox church. It was only after extensive restoration in the late 20th century that the mosque was returned to its original form.
St. Nicholas Church
A couple of blocks from Eski Dzhamiya is the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. Initially, there was only a small chapel on this site, built in honor of Yambol’s liberation by Russian troops in 1888. Later, the local residents expanded the structure, transforming it into an impressive church. A distinctive feature of this church is its intricate wooden carvings and beautifully painted interior walls.
The oldest Orthodox church in Yambol is located on the opposite bank of the Tundzha River. The Church of St. George, built in 1737, has a modest exterior. At the time, the Turks prohibited buildings from being taller than the mosque, so the church was built low and elongated. Inside, you’ll find unique wrought iron elements and ancient icons preserved over centuries.
